PETALING JAYA:
Oct 10, 2023. Wong Wei Jing and Lim Xiao Fen become romantically involved less than two months after meeting each other – with cheesecake playing a sweet role in their relationship.

Fast forward to Oct 10, 2024. The couple, now married and about to welcome their first child, open a café in Petaling Jaya, naming it 10 Ten Baker (The Secret Place). The star on the menu? Cheesecakes.

FMT Lifestyle recently dropped by to hear all about their love story – and to taste their indulgent cheesecakes!

Like their love story, the café’s location is far from ordinary. Tucked away on the first floor of a building dating back to 1954, the entrance lies in a back alley, a simple signboard marking the spot.

So, how did it all begin? “We met on Sept 1, 2023,” Lim, 35, said, adding that Wong had joined a Christian home fellowship that she was part of.

The years before had been deeply painful for him – his first wife died in a car accident in 2019, and the following year, his mother passed away. Spiralling into depression, Wong turned to exercise to cope.

However, when he suffered a slipped disc, he couldn’t work out any longer. It was at this point that he began to question his faith. In desperation, he joined the fellowship.

“I was the first person he got to know at the home fellowship,” recalled Lim. Romance, however, was the furthest thing from Wong’s mind.

What neither of them knew then however, was that before they had met, each had planned trips to Penang during the same time – Lim with a colleague, and Wong on a solo getaway to see a chiropractor there and to celebrate his birthday on Sept 25.

So, they arranged to meet in Penang. “On my birthday, although she had already returned to KL, she ordered a slice of cheesecake to be delivered to my hotel,” he said. Wong was touched by the gesture – cheesecake is his favourite.

Back home, they began seeing each other more frequently, and soon, romance was in the air. In fact, they believed their connection was a result of a divine intervention.

They tied the knot a few months later on Christmas Day. The following year, on Dec 11, they welcomed their daughter, Aly.

Their first venture as a married couple was starting a business together. “I was always spending my weekends at Lot 10. There’s a famous restaurant there called ‘The Tokyo Restaurant’, popular for its burnt cheesecake.

“Even when I was single, I would spend my weekends there alone. That’s how much I love cheesecake!” said Wong, 35.

Seeing his love for it, Lim baked him a burnt cheesecake – and it blew him away. He encouraged her to start selling them, and so she did, launching an online business with him.

Then they moved to their current premises, once owned by Wong’s late grandfather and now passed down to his father.

Today, they offer four types of burnt cheesecakes: signature or original, sea salt dark chocolate, hojicha and matcha. All cakes are baked daily, and a new blueberry flavour will be available soon.

They also serve hot and cold beverages like black coffee, latte, chocolate, tea and kombucha. As a bonus, when they’re free, they happily share their love story with customers.

But 10 Ten Baker is more than just a café – church services are held here on Sunday mornings and fellowship meetings on Friday nights.

Their business’ name is also more than just a meaningful date: for Wong, John 10:10 from the Bible resonates with him after everything he’s been through.

“The verse is about how the devil came to steal, kill and destroy, but Jesus said He came to give abundant life,” explained Wong.

“Good Friday is a day to remember Christ’s suffering for us. He didn’t die in vain. In exchange, he gave us life. Good Friday prepares us for Easter Sunday when He rose again,” he added.

“I hope that everyone who enters our café feels peace and enjoys hearing our love story,” said Lim.
