Humility and Gratitude: The Way to Longevity, Says 93-year-old Jago

Jagjit Kaur Sambhi, affectionately known as Jago, is no ordinary senior citizen. As a former schoolteacher and Selangor hockey and badminton player, she has maintained a sprightly demeanor and a sharp mind. Her 93rd birthday is a testament to this, as she still recalls the names and characteristics of her close friends with ease.

A Life of Wisdom and Resilience

Recently, Jago celebrated the third death anniversary of her brother, Dr. Jagjit "Billoo" Singh Sambhi, a former gynaecologist and ex-chairperson of the Malaysian Heart Foundation, who passed away at the age of 90 due to Covid-19. The event at her residence in Jalan Assunta, Petaling Jaya, was attended by many notable guests, including DJ Dave, IJN CEO Dr. Aizai Azan Abdul Rahim, and former Hulu Kelang state assemblyman Saari Sungib.

The Power of Gratitude and Humility

In her 93rd year, Jago can still serenade her friends with wonderful tunes, as she did during the luncheon. She attributes her longevity to her daily gratitude and humility. "I praise the Lord Almighty for my good health every day. Many of my aged friends are either bedridden or gone. I count my blessings to have led a complete life and be surrounded by so many wonderful relatives and friends," she said.

A Champion of the Less Fortunate

Jago has long championed the welfare of Sikh women and the less fortunate. Her life is filled with inspiring stories, including a chance encounter with Indian industrial magnate Ratan Tata, who shared with her how he had given 70% of his earnings to charity. "Ratan gave 70% of his earnings to charity. He related to me how, when passing a town in India, he had spotted legless children holed up in a welfare home. He donated 200 wheelchairs for them to become mobile," she recalled.

Advice for a Long and Happy Life

Jago’s parting advice is to "be kind, humble, and grateful for whatever we have." She believes that humility and gratitude are the keys to a long and happy life, filled with wonderful relationships and meaningful experiences.
