The home ministry has announced a trial of a QR code immigration clearance system at KLIA Terminal 1 and 2, aimed at reducing congestion at the nation’s main airport.

How the System Works

The system will involve 40 special lanes at both arrival and departure halls of KLIA Terminal 1 and 2, which can only be used by Malaysians. According to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, the QR code system will significantly reduce the time it takes to clear immigration. "It should take between five and seven seconds to clear immigration with the QR code system, compared with between 15 and 25 seconds using the conventional autogates," he said.

"Through this QR code system, travellers no longer need to take their passports out to clear immigration," said Saifuddin. "However, they are still required to bring their passports with them on their travels."
