KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin today criticized the government for allegedly concealing the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s Addendum Decree, which granted former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak the right to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.
In a media statement, Datuk Seri Hamzah described the act of hiding the decree as a “grave betrayal of the principles of transparency and the oath of allegiance to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Federal Constitution.”
He emphasized that the Court of Appeal’s decision confirmed the existence and validity of the Addendum Decree, as evidenced by an official letter dated January 4, 2025, issued by the Pahang Royal Household.
“As Prime Minister, he is obligated to execute any decree issued by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Denying or concealing such a decree is an act of treason that undermines the monarchy and violates the principles of constitutional supremacy,” he stated.
Addendum Decree Confirmed Valid
The letter, signed by the Royal Household Comptroller, Dato’ Haji Ahmad Khirrizal bin Ab Rahman, confirmed that the Addendum Decree dated January 29, 2024, was issued by Sultan Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who served as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The letter specified that Datuk Seri Najib Razak was granted permission to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest, and the decree was affirmed as valid and authentic.
The Philosophy of Betrayal: A Breach of Trust
Datuk Seri Hamzah further remarked that betrayal of a royal decree symbolized the government’s failure to honor the trust placed in it by the people and the monarchy.
“Betrayal begins when trust is broken. In this context, the failure to respect the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree not only damages the government’s relationship with the monarchy but also betrays the people’s confidence in national leadership,” he added.
Support from UMNO Leaders
Separately, UMNO Youth Chief Dr. Akmal Saleh called on the government to respect the decision and urged the immediate implementation of the decree.
