Indonesia Prioritises ASEAN Unity and Centrality

Indonesia will continue to prioritize ASEAN unity and centrality in the region while promoting greater support and respect for the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), said Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono. He made the statement at the 2025 Annual Press Statement in Jakarta, Friday.

A commitment to ASEAN

Sugiono stated that the new administration under President Prabowo Subianto has affirmed Indonesia’s desire to be a good neighbour, which naturally begins with the ASEAN region. “In the current Asia-Pacific geopolitical constellation, this centrality also entails the implementation of legal obligations by partner countries outside the region that have acceded to the TAC,” he said.

Support for regional and global issues

Indonesia would actively seek to help resolve the political and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, said Sugiono. The country remains committed to supporting the Palestinian cause, providing humanitarian aid, and supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

Strengthening Pacific relations

Indonesia aims to strengthen its relations with Pacific countries by being an equal development partner, guided by principles of mutual respect and appreciation.

BRICS membership and global governance

As a new member of BRICS, Indonesia will ensure it serves as a bridge between the interests of developing countries and the Indo-Pacific region, while actively working to mitigate escalating geo-economic and geopolitical tensions, Sugiono explained.

Reforming the United Nations

Regarding the United Nations (UN), Indonesia will take a leading role in driving multilateral reform to support and strengthen the organisation, making it more fit for purpose. This includes a resilient and inclusive international financial architecture that allows space for Global South leadership as a new force representing 85 per cent of the world’s population, Sugiono said.

Global governance and poverty

“This is essential to making global governance more relevant, ensuring it is not dominated by the wealthy at the expense of the poor,” said Sugiono.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Indonesia’s foreign policy under the new administration prioritizes ASEAN unity and centrality, supports regional and global issues, and aims to strengthen its relations with Pacific countries. The country also takes a leading role in driving multilateral reform to support and strengthen the United Nations, while actively working to mitigate escalating geo-economic and geopolitical tensions.
