PBB President Abang Johari: Party Unity Key to Smooth Leadership Transition

At 74 years old, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg acknowledged that the time will come for him to hand over the leadership to someone else. However, he stressed that before that happens, party members must work to prevent any issues that could threaten the party’s unity.

Setting the Stage for a Smooth Handover

PBB, he said, has been the backbone of Sarawak’s development and must remain strong. Citing past leadership transitions, he noted that the handovers from Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud to Tun Adenan Satem, and then to himself, occurred smoothly without any problems.

At the recent Central Zone PBB delegates’ conference at the Sibu Indoor Stadium, Abang Johari asked, "Will there be any issues after me?" The over 2,700 delegates present responded with a resounding ‘no’ to his question, with Abang Johari smiling and expressing his satisfaction.

Focusing on the Future

Abang Johari also stressed the importance of the party’s leadership, including the Women and Youth wings, in looking ahead and focusing on the future of Sarawak’s people. "While we celebrate our achievements, we must also prepare for what lies ahead," he said. "That’s why we’ve agreed to establish PBB Youth, who will carry forward our successes and adapt to a changing landscape."

He added that PBB’s top leadership has a duty to ensure a secure and prosperous future for the people of Sarawak. "We must ensure that our young generation is equipped with the skills and knowledge to excel in science and emerging fields," he said.

Resolutions Passed

The conference, which involved 24 PBB branches from Sarawak’s Central Zone, saw 15 resolutions passed. Key among these resolutions was unanimous support for Abang Johari to continue leading PBB and the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition to ensure political stability in Sarawak and Malaysia. It was also agreed that there would be no contest for the party presidency and vice-presidential positions during PBB’s 16th Convention in Kuching on February 14.

Conclusion

PBB’s president, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has emphasized the importance of party unity and the need for a smooth leadership transition. By focusing on the future and ensuring the party’s continued strength, PBB can continue to play a vital role in Sarawak’s development.
