Outgoing Coach Pleased with National Men’s Doubles Players’ Performance
Kuala Lumpur, January 12 – Outgoing national men’s doubles head coach Tan Bin Shen expressed his satisfaction with the performance of the national men’s doubles players, despite them failing to achieve his desired result at the 2025 Malaysia Open badminton championships.
Bin Shen, who announced his resignation as the national men’s doubles coach on December 20, felt that most of the men’s doubles shuttlers performed well but were a little unlucky not to have advanced further in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) season-opener at the Axiata Arena.
"Of course, my target was for one of our pairs to win this tournament, but I am pleased because they did all they could. Although they failed, I think they gave their best," he said.
A Learning Experience
Bin Shen emphasized that sometimes, despite their best efforts, teams do not achieve all their goals and targets. "Sometimes, we don’t achieve all our goals and targets. But that is part of the process we have to go through…,” he said.
The outgoing coach also expressed his hope that the players would continue to train diligently and put in the hard yards, even though he would no longer be with them after this.
Farewell Gift Unfulfilled
Bin Shen had wished for a farewell gift from his players, but it did not materialize. However, he was pleased with the overall performance of the team and believed that they had given their best.
New Coach on Board
Bin Shen will be succeeded by Herry Iman Pierngadi, nicknamed the "Fire Dragon", who was announced as the new national men’s doubles head coach on a four-year contract from February 1. Bin Shen believes that Pierngadi is the right man to take on the responsibility of training the doubles players, given his vast experience.
"He used to coach former world number one Kevin (Sanjaya Sukamuljo)-Marcus (Fernaldi Gideon). I think it’s good that Malaysia got him to help improve the performance of our doubles pairs,” he said.
Conclusion
Tan Bin Shen’s resignation as the national men’s doubles coach has come to an end, and he will be joining the Hong Kong national team next month. Despite the outcome of the 2025 Malaysia Open, Bin Shen is proud of the players’ performance and believes that they have a bright future ahead of them.
