Citizens Urge All NGOs to Call for Action from Minister of Communications Fahmi Fadzil and IGP Tan Sri Razarudin on the Use of Inappropriate Language by Social Media Influencers

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian citizens are urging all relevant NGOs, including the Social Media Leaders Association (PPMS), the Malaysian Social Media Influencers Association, the Sarawak Social Media Association, and the Communications & Media Consumers Association of Malaysia (PEKOMA), to take immediate action against social media influencers who use inappropriate and vulgar language, such as “dog” and other offensive terms, in their content.

The use of such coarse and immoral language not only tarnishes Malaysia’s image on the international stage but also negatively impacts the noble values of our society. Citizens are concerned that a handful of influencers using inappropriate terms to attract customers or followers may damage the country’s reputation.

Citizens also call on the Minister of Communications and Digital, Fahmi Fadzil, and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, to tighten regulations and oversight on social media influencers who promote content contrary to the country’s cultural norms. Citizens emphasize that stricter measures must be taken to ensure social media platforms are used more responsibly.

“We appreciate the positive efforts of influencers who use social media to contribute to the nation’s economy and promote Malaysia’s image on the international stage. However, we are deeply disappointed by a few individuals who misuse this platform for personal gain without considering the harmful effects on society,” the statement said.

Additionally, citizens urge the government and authorities to collaborate with NGOs and other stakeholders to introduce awareness programs on more responsible social media use. They hope that with stricter regulations, abuses of power by individuals that damage the country’s image can be prevented.

This statement reiterates that Malaysians hope all influencers who aim to enhance the country’s image internationally, especially in the economic sector, should be more responsible for the content they publish. Content that is beneficial, ethical, and positive should be prioritized to elevate the country’s dignity in the eyes of the world.
