Dang Wangi Police Chief Issues Warning: Anti-Corruption Rally to Face Stern Action

Must Read

Dang Wangi Police Chief, Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman, has warned the public against attending the anti-corruption rally scheduled for January 25. He stated that stern action would be taken against anyone who violates the law.

Sulizmie explained that the notice submitted by the organizers was incomplete and did not have the consent of the location owner for the planned rally.

Meanwhile, former Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Hanipa Maidin, has called for the resignation of the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Mohamad Sabu, who is also the President of Amanah, should the government block the rally.

Hanipa emphasized that as a lawyer, he had frequently represented Mohamad in cases related to the right to peaceful assembly, and had even been detained himself in defense of such rights.

“A strong government will not fear any peaceful rally by any group,” said Hanipa, adding that the image of the unity government would improve if the rally were allowed.

However, Minister of Home Affairs Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil have defended the actions of the authorities to ensure the rally complies with the law.

Organizers, including Bersih and Suaram, remain adamant about proceeding with the rally, which is planned to start outside Sogo shopping mall and march toward Dataran Merdeka.

This situation raises questions about the unity government’s stance on freedom of assembly and its willingness to listen to the voices of the people.
