Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan Urges Government to Address Nurse Shortage Crisis, Calls on Private Colleges to Offer Free Nursing Education

KUALA LUMPUR, February 5 – Chief Editor and activist, Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan, has urged the government to take serious action to address the critical shortage of nurses in hospitals nationwide. He stressed that the situation is becoming increasingly dire and requires immediate solutions to ensure that the public continues to receive quality healthcare services.

According to him, one of the measures that could be implemented is encouraging private colleges and universities to step forward and offer free nursing programs, similar to initiatives in other countries.

Private Colleges Must Play a Role in Solving the Crisis

Dato’ G Kumaar pointed out that many private colleges and universities generate substantial profits from high tuition fees, particularly in nursing programs. However, in times of crisis like this, these institutions should take greater responsibility in helping the country address the shortage of healthcare workers.

“We see many private educational institutions becoming extremely wealthy from student fees, but what is their contribution to society? This is not a difficult move for them. If other countries can provide free nursing education, why can’t Malaysia?” he questioned.

He proposed that private colleges, with government support and collaboration with stakeholders, should provide more full scholarships or tuition-free programs to attract more students into the nursing profession.

Government Must Take Firm Action

Additionally, he urged the government to play a more active role in addressing this issue by introducing special incentives for colleges and universities willing to offer free or low-cost nursing education.

“The government cannot rely solely on public colleges and universities. If the private sector can help in nursing education, then the government should provide support in the form of grants or tax incentives,” he added.

Dato’ G Kumaar also reminded that the nursing shortage issue is not only affecting government hospitals but also private hospitals, which are increasingly dependent on foreign labor.

The Future of Malaysia’s Healthcare Sector

He hopes that this proposal will receive serious attention from the government and educational institutions, as it not only helps solve the nurse shortage issue but also benefits students who are passionate about the field but face financial constraints.

“We want to see more young Malaysians choose nursing as a career without being burdened by high student debt. This is a step towards ensuring a stronger and more sustainable future for our healthcare sector,” he said.

He urged all parties, including the government, educational institutions, and the private sector, to work together to address this crisis for the well-being of the people and the survival of Malaysia’s healthcare system.
