PENANG, 7 FEBRUARY 2025 – Ottrangknews Chief Editor, Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan, has once again pressured Penang Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow, to take firm action against the rampant issues of gambling and alcohol sales in the state.
He pointed out that Perak has demonstrated bold leadership by tightening control over alcohol sales, yet Penang remains silent without any clear action.
Perak Has Taken Action – When Will Penang?
This issue has gained widespread attention after Perak Chief Minister, Saarani Mohamad, granted approval for the Ipoh City Council (MBI) to impose stricter regulations on alcohol sales in Muslim-majority areas. This decision was praised by many, including Permatang Pauh MP, Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan (PN), who urged Penang to take similar measures.
However, no local authorities (PBTs) in Penang have taken the initiative to implement similar controls.
“If other states can act in the best interest of the people, why is Penang still silent? Is the state government more focused on gambling and alcohol revenues rather than the welfare of its people?” questioned Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan.
Penang Must Take Immediate Action!
Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan stressed that the state government must not remain idle and should immediately take the following steps:
✅ Shut down gambling outlets – Whether licensed or illegal, gambling must be eradicated to protect public welfare.
✅ Regulate alcohol sales – If Perak can tighten its laws, Penang must also take effective action.
✅ Provide economic alternatives – Those dependent on these industries must be supported with better job opportunities.
“The people demand change! Penang must make bold decisions that prioritize public welfare rather than merely profiting from gambling and alcohol,” he asserted.
The Chief Minister Must Respond!
As of now, Penang Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow, has yet to respond to this challenge. The people of Penang are eagerly waiting to see whether the state government will follow Perak’s lead or continue to remain silent.
Ottrangknews will continue monitoring this issue and seek answers from the state government.
