“Strong Warning for MP Jelutong!” – Dr. Maza Criticizes Interference in Religious Affairs

Must Read

KUALA LUMPUR, FEBRUARY 8, 2025 – Dr. Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin (Dr. Maza), a prominent scholar in Malaysia, has issued a strong warning to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Jelutong regarding his remarks interfering in religious matters in the state of Perlis. Dr. Maza emphasized that the MP for Jelutong has no right to intervene in the invitation of religious speakers invited to the International Sunnah Convention held recently.

Dr. Maza firmly stated that matters related to the invitation of speakers are none of anyone’s concern except those who issue the invitations.

> “Just as I do not question what material is used to wipe his forehead and why he wipes his forehead, he should not question who I invite to Perlis to give lectures or religious talks.”

“Do Not Interfere in Other People’s Affairs” – Dr. Maza Warns MP Jelutong

Dr. Maza reminded that Islam teaches its followers not to meddle in matters that do not concern them, and he referred to a Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) which says:

> “One of the signs of a person’s good Islam is that they leave matters that do not concern them.”

He emphasized that only when a speaker makes provocative statements that could harm public harmony or incite societal tension, is it appropriate for anyone to comment or criticize.

Additionally, Dr. Maza reminded that there are many pressing issues in the country that require attention, including issues related to the construction of places of worship on land that is not designated for such purposes.

> “Do we question these matters every time we speak? Have we ever commented on who is invited to their places of worship? Why intervene in matters that provide no benefit?”

Political Warning: “Ramasamy Failed, Don’t Follow the Same Path”

Dr. Maza also issued a political warning to the MP for Jelutong by referring to the fate of a former politician who tried to interfere in religious matters:

> “This will not bring any good to him. Ramasamy tried the same thing, and eventually, he became irrelevant in politics. If we oppose him, we will oppose him until the end.”

Dr. Maza stressed that his action of reprimanding the MP for Jelutong is not only to defend Islam but also to remind about the importance of maintaining unity between Muslims and non-Muslims in the country. Interference in religious matters could have unintended consequences, including creating political tension and social problems.

Final Warning: “Silence is Better”

In conclusion, Dr. Maza gave a final warning to the MP for Jelutong, advising him to remain silent or correct his statement if he wishes to avoid bigger problems. Dr. Maza explained that it would be better for the MP to stay silent than to make statements that could increase anger or damage national harmony.

> “This is my first warning to him before he proceeds with further statements. Whether he chooses to remain silent or correct his statement, it is better for him.”

Why Is This Issue Important for the Muslim Community?

The issue raised by the MP for Jelutong opens a deep discussion about the boundaries between politics and religion in Malaysia. Political interference in religious affairs not only invites tension between political leaders and the people but could also undermine the religious harmony that has long been maintained in the country.

Muslims in this country must be more discerning when choosing leaders who respect religious rights and societal unity. As Dr. Maza emphasized, politics and religion should not be mixed to the point where it damages the long-established harmony.

Maintaining Harmony: An Issue That Must Be a Priority

This issue raises questions about the role of political leaders in maintaining religious harmony and raises awareness that politics should function to improve the lives of the people, not to create tension among communities of different religions and ethnicities.

With Dr. Maza’s clear warning, it is hoped that all parties will understand the importance of respecting the boundaries between religion and politics and strengthening the unity of the Muslim community for a better future.
