KUALA NERUS, Feb 14 (Bernama) — Kuala Lumpur City FC (KL City FC) defeated Terengganu FC (TFC) 2-1 at their own backyard to collect three valuable points in a Super League match at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium (SSMZA), here tonight.
With the victory, The City Boys managed to move up one spot to sixth in the Super League table with 24 points from 18 matches.
The match started slowly without any dangerous attempts by both teams in the first 10 minutes but the action picked up after that and the home team coached by Badrul Afzan Razali stunned the visitors with the first goal through young defender Muhammad Safwan Mazlan.
Jolted by the goal, the visitors rallied to set up a series of attacks and got the first chance through Jovan Motika, but his header was slightly higher than the crossbar.
Not to be outdown, the hosts doubled their efforts and created a golden opportunity in the 21st minute, but Nelson Bonilla’s effort was successfully saved by goalkeeper, Muhammad Hafizul Hakim Khairul Nizam Jothy who was alert in front of goal.
Just as half time was looming, Miroslav Kuljanac’s squad managed to equalise, thanks to a looping header from team captain, Paolo Josue.
After the break TFCÂ intensified their attacks and looked like the most likely team to snatch the winner but the City Boys had other ideas to spoil their party.
The deciding moment arrived in the 79th minute when Patrick Reichelt finished off a splendid move to give KL City FC all three points but the visitors had to wait for some tense moments before the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) awarded the goal although the lines had raised his flag for offside initially.
Despite several dangerous attempts by TFC, the 2-1 score remained unchanged but credit must go to KL City FC defenders who stood their ground and held their fort well.
