Malaysian Truck Drivers Question Trust in Government Under Anthony Loke

Must Read

Kuala Lumpur, February 22 – The welfare of truck drivers has once again come under scrutiny as many express dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of their concerns, particularly under the leadership of Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

In a recent survey, many truck drivers recalled the strong support they gave to Pakatan Harapan in the 2018 General Election. During that time, truck drivers played a crucial role in securing the government’s victory by hanging flags on their vehicles, honking horns, and decorating their trucks with banners as a sign of support.

However, now many truck drivers feel disappointed with the government’s policies, which they claim have burdened them. One of the major issues raised is the enforcement of time restrictions for trucks on highways, which they argue disrupts their daily operations.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke has previously instructed stricter enforcement by the Road Transport Department (JPJ), including fines, vehicle seizures, and tighter monitoring of truck movements, particularly in quarry areas. While this measure aims to improve road safety, truck drivers feel it imposes excessive pressure on them without offering effective alternatives.

Following several fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles, the ministry has intensified monitoring and emphasized the responsibilities of both drivers and trucking companies. However, truck drivers see this as an additional burden on the industry without addressing their real challenges.

There have also been calls for truck drivers to unite and bring their vehicles to Putrajaya to stage a clear protest against these perceived oppressive policies. Some suggest parking trucks in front of the Prime Minister’s Office and the Transport Minister’s Office as a demonstration against the unfavorable policies.

Now, truck drivers are left questioning: Should they still trust the current government after facing numerous difficulties over the past few years? This issue has become a hot topic in the transportation industry, with many eagerly awaiting the government’s response and subsequent actions regarding the welfare of truck drivers in Malaysia.
