The Kampung Boy Who Built a Restaurant Empire
From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Franchise
Perak-born Saravanan Subramaniam is the proud founder of the India Gate restaurant franchise. With 10 thriving locations and more in the works, this restaurant franchise has become a firm favourite for those who crave the rich flavours of North and South India.
A Journey of Trial and Error
Speaking with FMT Lifestyle at his 10th branch located on Jalan Barat, Saravanan opened up about his challenging journey to success. Having studied at a Tamil school and earning a diploma in computer engineering, he initially struggled to find work.
From Vegetable Wholesaler to Restaurant Owner
After learning the trade, Saravanan started his own vegetable wholesale business at Pasar Borong Selangor and ran it for around 15 years. However, life took an unexpected turn in 2005 – he was diagnosed with throat cancer, and an accident took the life of his brother, his closest ally.
A Fresh Start
As Saravanan spent the next eight years recovering, he decided it was time for a fresh start. With his experience in the vegetable trade, he saw an opportunity to supply vegetables to restaurants. This led him to buy over a restaurant in Cyberjaya, which was initially a failing business.
The Birth of India Gate
Saravanan identified that the main issue with the previous restaurant was its management and the chef’s inability to deliver good-quality food. However, the area had a strong customer base, and he saw an opportunity to turn things around. He brought in a new team and revamped the menu, and that’s when the magic happened.
Expansion and Success
The first outlet of India Gate restaurant was a huge success, and Saravanan opened a second branch in Puchong, Bandar Puteri. He took charge of the interior design, inspired by his father’s work as a carpenter, which led to the restaurant’s distinct wood-themed aesthetic.
Unique Dishes and Awards
Every dish served at Saravanan’s restaurants gets his personal approval before making it onto the menu. His favorite is the banana leaf meal, featuring over 16 different items – all with unlimited refills. India Gate’s biryanis and naans are also bestsellers, and they even have a Malaysia Book of Records title to prove it.
Awards and Accolades
India Gate Restaurant received the Consumers’ Choice Award in 2022, while Saravanan was honored as Business Icon of the Year 2023 at the Desam Awards in Chennai, India.
Conclusion
India Gate’s story is a testament to the power of hard work and determination. From humble beginnings to a thriving franchise, Saravanan’s journey is an inspiration to many. As the restaurant continues to grow, it’s clear that his passion for good food and good business has paid off.
