Nasi Impit that Lasts up to a Year: A Game-Changer for the Industry

A Journey of Innovation

After decades of experimenting with different methods, a food entrepreneur has found a way to ensure his product can last up to a year using retort technology. Ahmad Yaacob, the owner of Nasi Impit Adyanana, has successfully implemented this approach to produce more than 500 packs of nasi impit daily, including for the Singapore market.

From Humble Beginnings to a Leading Player

Ahmad Yaacob recalled that when he started the business in 1998, he could only produce 12 packs of nasi impit a day, with a shelf life of 24 hours. He and his daughter Nur Liyana tried different methods to extend the shelf life, but unfortunately, the nasi impit would often become mouldy and watery even with proper packaging.

Breaking Through the Barrier

It wasn’t until 2020, during the Movement Control Order, that Ahmad discovered retort technology, which involves heating food sealed in a container under high pressure to achieve commercial sterility, extending shelf life and ensuring safety. He learned more about the method from an entrepreneur in Melaka and received guidance from the agriculture department.

Retort Technology: The Key to Success

With retort technology, Ahmad’s nasi impit can last up to a year at room temperature, as long as it remains unopened. His business uses a retort machine to pack its products, and to maintain authenticity, he wraps the nasi impit in banana leaves before sealing it in plastic, resulting in a product that retains the same aroma as those that are traditionally served.

A Growing Demand

I am grateful that this Ramadan, orders from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur have increased to more than 500 packs daily. Due to customer demand, we are offering our nasi impit in two sizes, 500g and 1kg, he added.

Award-Winning Product

Nasi Impit Adyanana has been selected to receive an additional retort machine worth RM45,000 under the Batu Pahat district smart agriculture and agricultural mechanisation project.

Conclusion

With the success of retort technology, Nasi Impit Adyanana is poised to revolutionize the industry, providing a product that is not only delicious but also safe and long-lasting. As the demand for his product continues to grow, Ahmad is confident that his business will continue to thrive, bringing joy to customers around the world.
