Malaysian Amateur Golfer Mirabel Ting Makes a Comeback in Maybank Championship

Mirabel’s Impressive Performance

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 (Bernama) – Malaysian amateur golfer Mirabel Ting has made a brilliant comeback in the 2024 Maybank Championship at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, firing an eight-under 64 to be joint-best performer along with Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul in the third round of the US$3 million (about RM13 million) event.

A Turnaround After Second-Round Blip

Mirabel, 18, had a disappointing second round, carding a three-over 75, but she bounced back strongly, carding eight birdies (holes number 3, 4, 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18) to finish the three-day tournament at 10-under 206, sharing 10th place with Australian Gabriela Ruffels.

Sole Amateur in the Tournament

As the sole amateur in the tournament, Mirabel started strongly with a five-under 67 on Thursday, but she did have a blip yesterday. However, she managed to overcome her struggles, hitting her iron shots well and making putts drop, allowing her to shoot an impressive score.

"I hit my iron shots really good today and (the) putts dropped today. So, that’s two things that I did really well and managed to shoot this score," she said.

Olympian Ashley Lau Also Shines

Meanwhile, Olympian Ashley Lau continued her momentum, carding a six-under 66 to be joint-12th with six others with an overall score of nine-under 207. Despite feeling tired, Ashley was pleased with her performance, which saw her create multiple birdie opportunities.

"I think for sure putts were definitely dropping and I was giving myself a lot of birdie opportunities. I think I only missed a green or two today. That definitely helped. Overall, I am very happy with my game," she said.

Other Malaysian Golfers Struggle

The other two Malaysian golfers, Nur Durriyah Damian and Liyana Durisic, remained at the bottom of the 76-golfer leaderboard, with overall scores of 17-over 233 and 20-over 236 respectively.

Conclusion

Mirabel’s remarkable comeback in the 2024 Maybank Championship is a testament to her determination and skill. As the sole amateur in the tournament, she has shown that she belongs among the best. With this performance, Mirabel is sure to inspire young Malaysian golfers to work hard and strive for excellence in the sport.
