The recent imposition of a sweeping 24% tariff by the United States on Malaysian goods is not just an economic challenge — it is a call for unity, innovation, and assertive leadership from Malaysia and ASEAN as a whole. While the decision by the US appears premature and inaccurately calculated, Malaysia must rise above retaliation and take a constructive, strategic approach.
As a media leader and activist, I see this moment as an opportunity for Malaysia to do three key things:
1. Lead ASEAN Towards Economic Solidarity Malaysia, with its stable economic base, should champion an ASEAN-wide economic strategy. We must not act in isolation. Tengku Zafrul’s efforts to coordinate with ASEAN ministers are commendable, but we must go further — creating regional trade pacts that reduce dependence on the US, and strengthen intra-ASEAN trade flows.
2. Accelerate Industrial Diversification and Innovation The tariffs target traditional industries like textiles and furniture. This is a wake-up call to push faster towards high-value industries: green tech, automation, and advanced manufacturing. Incentivising local businesses to shift and upgrade will ensure long-term resilience.
3. Use Diplomatic Channels Boldly, Yet Calmly While we should not retaliate with tariffs, we must use every available diplomatic channel to argue our case on the global stage. Malaysia’s diplomatic voice should be louder in platforms like the WTO and ASEAN dialogues. We must advocate for fair global trade practices and call out flawed policies with facts and precision.
Above all, as Malaysians, we must stay united in the face of adversity. This is not the time for division or panic. It is the time to turn challenge into strength, adversity into advancement.
