Many areas have one spot that the locals wish to keep a secret – often a place with good food, excellent prices, and very good service. If the secret got out, it could mean an influx of people from farther away, potentially spoiling the perfect combination of factors.

For those in the vicinity of Kuchai Lama in Kuala Lumpur, that place may well be Papasan Canteen.

This establishment is located just a stone’s throw away from SMJK Chong Wen, one of the Chinese schools by Old Klang Road. Since the area is a pretty small commercial area, parking can sometimes be a bit of a challenge.

The restaurant itself does not allow for advanced booking, but they have a very good queuing system with super fast service, so waiting time is not something one should be too worried about.

As the name suggests, Papasan has a setup akin to a school or workplace canteen, with long tables and minimal decor – although it is clean and air conditioned.

The menu is presented in a clear A4 folder with plenty of photos, which is helpful if you’re not familiar with their offerings.

Start your meal with one of their most popular dishes: the uniquely named “omu curry rice 5p” (RM22). Steamed rice wrapped with egg, with Japanese curry, and five – yes, specifically five – pieces of crispy chicken thigh.

This dish offers fantastic value and punches way above its price in terms of taste as well.

Then there’s the “tri-colour rice” (RM18), with minced chicken, chunks of smoked duck, ginger juice, edamame, eggs, and white rice. While it’s a dish that tastes pretty healthy, it could use a slightly stronger flavour or seasoning.

For another novelty, try the miso mayo cauliflower (RM10). A salad of cauliflower with fried garlic, longan, and aonori seaweed flakes, this is served cold, and proved to be a nice complement to the other dishes.

Papasan Canteen serves some pretty good sushi, too. (KY Speaks pics)

Being a Japanese fusion restaurant, Papasan Canteen offers a few sushi items on the menu. Give the Papasan roll (RM27) a try – salmon maki with foie gras, crabmeat, cucumber, tobiko and garlic mayo.

Or go for the unagi maki (RM24), with grilled eel, crabmeat, cucumber, and bonito flakes on top.

Both are packed with umami, although purists may dislike the fact liberal usage of sauce (mayo and balsamic vinegar is this writer’s guess). But as a fusion place, perhaps they are entitled to a bit of leeway.

The silverfish cold tofu (RM11) is a simple side dish of crispy silver fish on top of cold tofu with soy sauce and some ebiko on top. Compared to the other two, this one was just OK.

Overall, Papasan Canteen serves up excellent value with dishes that are well above average. You just might become a regular patron if you lived in the area!
