PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian food industry stands on the precipice of significant transformation, as the global food landscape continues to evolve in response to growing environmental concerns and changing consumer preferences.

To remain competitive, the country’s food sector must adapt to new trends and seize emerging opportunities. In context, two major shows – one centring on food security and the other on the café industry – will be held simultaneously at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre this month, offering a unique opportunity for the local F&B industry to network, share insights, and explore solutions.

My Food 2025: bolstering Malaysia’s food security efforts

Organised by Montgomery Asia, My Food 2025 aims to be a dedicated platform for championing local food suppliers and promoting food security. Themed “The Flavours of Your Community”, the show’s mission is connect local suppliers and buyers, to ensure locally sourced food becomes a key driver of industry growth.

“There are many food shows in Malaysia, but none have such a unique focus of encouraging more local produce to enter the supply chain,” Montgomery Asia project director Alun Jones explained.

“We believe this is beneficial for all parties involved, as it helps consumer’s diets, benefits manufacturers, improves food security for the government, and reduces carbon footprints.”

My Food 2025 is supported by the ministry of agriculture and food security, with its secretary-general set to deliver the show’s keynote address.

Other speakers include the Suria KLCC Alliance, a collective championing local food sourcing; and BoomGrow Farms, a farm-to-table vegetable supplier. Health consultants will also be present to educate visitors on improving their diets.

Visitors can discover products and services from over 100 exhibitors, participate in interactive discussions, and enjoy networking opportunities.

Jones hopes My Food 2025 will play a small but significant role in shaping industry collaboration and fostering sustainable practices.

“Many Malaysian manufacturers are engaged in interesting projects now, and our show’s aim is to highlight them. There are many underutilised local products that could get much higher notice in the value chain, and we hope to highlight and support them,” he added.

ICBS 2025: connecting Malaysia’s café and food sectors

Held simultaneously will be this year’s International Café & Beverage Show (ICBS), which aims to showcase the latest products, trends and developments in coffee and café culture. The show’s first two days will cater to trade visitors, while the final day will be open to the public.

“ICBS 2025 is dedicated to connecting and inspiring the café and food sectors, offering a stage for businesses to innovate, collaborate and expand,” Jones said.

Held since 2022 by Montgomery Asia, ICBS has proven highly popular, with last year’s show attracting a record 15,000 visitors. This year, 18,000 attendees from 55 countries, hosting over 600 participating brands, are expected at the event.

According to Jones, coffee culture is blossoming rapidly in Malaysia, with the café and beverage industry witnessing a record growth of 28% in 2024.

He hopes businesses will use ICBS 2025 to leverage this growing market, and seize the opportunity to showcase their expertise while engaging with one of the region’s most dynamic industries.

ICBS 2025 will also host the Malaysia Open Championships, comprising the Malaysia Open Barista Championship, Malaysia Open Latte Art, and the Malaysia Open Brewers Cup.

“The skill of Malaysian baristas is very high; the coffee offerings they are doing here is very innovative. That’s an amazing achievement, considering Malaysia only set up a specialty coffee association 10 to 15 years ago,” Jones noted.

The event will further showcase a broad range of products beyond coffee, such as teas, juices, pastries, sustainable packaging design solutions, and cutting-edge point-of-sale payment systems, to ensure a comprehensive representation of the café and beverage ecosystem.

Also look out for the Roasters Village, a space dedicated to shining the spotlight on boutique coffee roasters and their craftsmanship. This unique platform will allow smaller roasters to directly engage with buyers, and showcase their distinctive blends to a diverse international audience.

Ultimately, Jones hopes ICBS 2025 will be “an insightful showcase of the versatility of coffee”, adding that the My Food 2025 component “adds a lovely touch of local flavour”.

“We hope the events provide strong synergy with each other, and encourage visitors to return for next year’s event, which will be even bigger and better,” he concluded.
