KLANG: A renowned food haven, Klang delights both residents and visitors with its mouthwatering array of local favourites: nasi lemak, roti canai, popiah and more.

One World Bistro, which opened its doors for business last November, is quickly becoming one of the royal city’s hidden gems. Here, you’ll find homey, delicious Indian food that might transport you to your grandmother’s or mother’s kitchen.

The restaurant is spacious, airy and clean – the kind of place where you’ll want to linger after you’ve finished your meal, perhaps with a hot cup of masala tea.

But what truly sets this restaurant apart is the warmth and hospitality of the founders, husband-and-wife Jayaseelan David and Puspa Muniandy.

While the food and beverage industry is admittedly demanding – requiring hard work, long hours and grit – the couple is driven by a meaningful cause.

“Once this restaurant picks up, we are going to channel part of the profits to charity. We are going to give it back to society,” Jayaseelan, 71, told FMT Lifestyle.

The couple, who have four children and four grandchildren, aims to help the needy through the Bethlehem Blessing Hands Welfare Organisation of Malaysia, an NGO they founded in 2017.

According to Puspa, 52, the NGO lends a helping hand to those in need through the provision of food, clothing and other essentials.

Jayaseelan said that public donations dwindled after the pandemic, forcing them to use their own funds to continue helping the less fortunate.

Eventually, they made the bold decision to open the restaurant – dipping into their retirement savings – with the hope of creating a sustainable source of income to fund the NGO’s initiatives, instead of relying solely on public donations.

“We want to establish this business and pass it over to our children to carry on our mission,” shared Jayaseelan.

Opening a restaurant felt like a natural step for the couple: they love cooking and have experience operating food stalls. They have even run a catering business.

“We cook with love. We put in a lot of effort, and we don’t hold anything back,” said Jayaseelan.

This spirit is beautifully captured in the restaurant’s tagline, “One Love One Heart”, which is displayed on the wall, alongside the words “All that you do must be done in love”.

Among the highlights here are fish head curry, mutton curry, chicken curry, yoghurt chicken, chicken 65, chicken varuval, prawn sambal, sotong curry and biryani.

If you’re especially famished, what can be more satisfying than a hearty banana leaf rice meal? Pair it with their prawn sambal – the crustaceans are fresh, bursting with flavour and lip-smackingly good. Another highlight is the mutton varuval, cooked to tender perfection and infused with aromatic spices.

Or treat yourself to the biryani, which is available twice a week. The rice is soft and fluffy, perfect with chicken varuval.

Craving for something with a bit more crunch? The chicken 65 will hit the right spots – flavourful, crispy, just the right amount of spice to give it a nice kick.

The masala tea is the highlight for this writer as the brew is fragrant and milky, and not too sweet. Other items on the menu include local favourites such as mee goreng, mee hoon goreng, nasi lemak, roti canai and more.

They also serve teatime treats like curry puffs and vadai. Pair these with a steaming cup of kopi o and you might just find yourself sighing in delight.

And for the big-hearted couple, it is rewarding to see customers enjoy their food and share sincere compliments. “I love people. When they come in, we are happy to see them. We want to serve them,” said Puspa.

“Everything that you do, even the smallest thing, should be done wholeheartedly. It must come from the heart. Even when we’re serving people, we do it with a cheerful heart,” added Jayaseelan.
