KUALA LUMPUR: Benihana, the internationally renowned teppanyaki restaurant, has been delighting guests since its founding in 1964 by Japanese American entrepreneur, Rocky Aoki – yes, the father of popular DJ Steve Aoki.
Famed globally for transforming a simple meal into a memorable occasion, the heart of the Benihana experience lies in the art of tableside teppanyaki, where skilled chefs slice, flip and sear on a steel grill with precision and flair – right before your eyes. It’s truly a feast for one’s senses.
Since Rocky opened the first Benihana restaurant in New York City, the brand has expanded its presence to over 70 locations worldwide. And this year, Benihana made its debut in Malaysia.
The first outlet here, located in Suria KLCC, opened on April 3 through a collaboration between Continuum Hospitality Group and Minor International.
Intimate and tastefully designed, the outlet features warm lighting and natural stone textures, creating a welcoming atmosphere suited for family gatherings, business dinners and romantic dates.
“With Benihana Malaysia, we adopted the hybrid model used in Singapore. It has two different dining experiences: a main dining area with an a la carte menu, and the counter experience that Benihana is internationally known for,” Kyran Arusalm, 31, director of Benihana Malaysia, told FMT Lifestyle.

The counter experience features a limited-seat teppanyaki station and offers guests front-row access to thrilling fire shows and culinary performances.
According to Kyran, the counter – always in high demand – seats 10 to 12 diners, while the main dining area accommodates 68.
He added that private dining rooms will soon be introduced for more intimate gatherings. These rooms will feature Benihana’s signature teppanyaki stations and offer an exclusive menu.
“Benihana has always been about more than just great dining. It’s about creating moments – the laughter around the table, the amazement during the performance, the flavours that stay with you long after the meal is done. We’re excited to share that magic with Malaysia,” said Kyran.
The FMT Lifestyle team got a taste of the Benihana experience recently – and it didn’t disappoint. The chefs wowed diners with their “fiery skills”, delivering a performance as good as the food.

The teppanyaki station offers a kaiseki, or multi-course, menu with three set options. Each set includes garlic fried rice and onion soup – signature items on the Benihana menu.
These dishes live up to their reputation: the fried rice is flavourful, while the onion soup, with its light and clear broth, is simple yet satisfying.
For a lighter meal, a combination of (clockwise from top) edamame, chawanmushi (Japanese savoury egg custard) and a Boston roll might just hit the spot. (Andrea Rhiannon Edmonds @ FMT Lifestyle)
The a la carte menu in the main dining area features a wider selection beyond teppanyaki, including sushi, noodles, rice dishes and more.
Kickstart your meal with the chawanmushi, a smooth and silky Japanese savoury egg custard. Craving for a Japanese roll? The Boston Roll, made with ebi tempura, lobster bits, kyuri (Japanese cucumber), tobiko (fish roe) and lobster sauce, is a delicious option.
For something heartier, explore the teppanyaki selection, which includes beef, chicken, lamb, fish, prawns, scallops and oysters. Each set comes with a house salad, onion soup, homemade pickles, garlic fried rice and “hibachi” (grilled) vegetables.

The Norwegian salmon belly is well-seasoned, with a crispy exterior that gives way to tender, flaky flesh. Or opt for the Australian tenderloin steak: juicy and perfectly seared, it’s exactly what you need if you’re in a carnivorous mood.
Overall, whether you’re young or old, Benihana Malaysia serves a fantastic feast of food, fun – and of course, fire!
