PETALING JAYA: Recently crowned Thailand Open women’s doubles champions Pearly Tan-M Thinaah had some good news after clearing their opening round in the Malaysia Masters at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil today.

The world No 4 pair, who outclassed Hong Kong duo Fan Ka Yan-Yau Mau Ying 21-17, 21-16 in 37 minutes, were given a walkover by their Thai opponents Pichamon Phatcharaphisutsin-Nannapas Sukklad in the second round scheduled for tomorrow.

No reasons were given for the Thai duo’s withdrawal shown in the schedule for tomorrow. Pearly-Thinaah will meet a pair from Thailand or Indonesia in their following match.

Meanwhile, world No 3 men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik became the sixth Malaysian pair to reach the last 16 of the championships.

The reigning Asian champions who won the Thailand Open title last week defeated Taiwanese pair Chiu Hsiang Chieh-Wang Chi Lin 21-18, 21-16 in a match that lasted 39 minutes.

They will meet another Taiwanese pair – Liu Kwang Heng-Yang Po Han – tomorrow.

However, men’s singles player Ng Tze Yong had to retire after injuring his right knee in his opening match.

Tze Yong, who was leading 4-3 in the second game against Hong Kong player Angus Ng after winning the first game 22-20, was forced to give up.

Although the Malaysian is ranked much lower compared with Angus who is world No 21, he gave his opponent a scare before being forced to bow out.

The 25-year-old only returned to action last month after a 14-month layoff because of a back injury.

Malaysia’s challenge in both the men’s and women’s singles fizzled out when Goh Jun Wei was also bundled out easily by Thailand’s world No 11 Ratchanok Intanon 21-7, 21-15.

Women’s singles player K Letshanaa and men’s singles player Leong Jun Hao were knocked out in the first round earlier.
