KUCHING, June 6 (Bernama) — Kuching City Football Club president Datuk Fazzruddin Abdul Rahman said he would focus on bringing football to the grassroots if elected Football Association of Sarawak  (FAS) president.

He added that he would also review the association’s roles and study what needed to be done if he was given the chance to lead FAS.

“Of course, football is my passion. To me, it’s no longer about forming a football team, but bringing football to the people,” he told reporters after officiating the Metrocity Convention Centre pre-launch in his capacity of Chief Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier.

He also pointed out that he would be unable to carry out his goals alone and required the support of a strong team.

“How do we do it? Many ways, I have several ideas but of course, I can’t do it myself. I need a strong supporting team, only then it can be done,” he said, adding that he hoped to form a strong FAS team, not just a team capable of playing football, but a state football association that was strong enough to realise his vision and mission in determining the direction of Sarawak football.

On his role with Kuching City FC under FAS, Fazzruddin explained that the existing structure would be maintained.

“FAS has many affiliate members. One of them is the Kuching Division Football Association with a team, Kuching City FC that plays in the Super League. So the structure remains the same,” he said.

Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah was reported to have said previously that Fazzruddin was the best candidate to be the FAS president based on his performance helming Kuching City FC since its founding in 2015.

Kuching City FC had gained promotion to the Super League in 2022 and is currently fourth in league standings, behind JDT, Selangor and Sabah.

Fazzruddin’s name has been floated as a replacement to Abang Zulkarnain Abang Abdul Rahman, who has declared that he would not contest the FAS presidency for the 2025/2027 term at the association’s annual general meeting on June 14.
