HAMILTON (Canada), June 25 (Bernama-Anadolu) — Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo conceded defeat in the city’s Democratic mayoral primary Tuesday night, paving the way for frontrunner Zohran Mamdani as the likely first Muslim mayor of New York City.

According to Anadolu Ajansi (AA), unofficial results showed Mamdani leading with 43.5 per cent of first-round votes, ahead of Cuomo’s 36.38 per cent.

The final results will be determined through ranked-choice voting, expected to be announced next Tuesday.

At a campaign rally, Cuomo said he had called Mamdani to offer congratulations.

“Tonight was not our night. Tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani’s night,” said Cuomo. “He deserved it. He won.”

Despite conceding, Cuomo did not rule out an independent run in the general election.

The Democratic primary in New York City is often seen as the most critical step toward winning the mayoralty in the heavily Democratic city.

Mamdani will likely face incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is seeking re-election as an independent, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa in the November general election.

Mamdani’s campaign focused on housing affordability and the rising cost of living. He also secured endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the final weeks of the race.

New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, a fellow progressive, said Mamdani is now on track to clinch the nomination.

“We are sending Andrew Cuomo back to the suburbs,” Lander said on election night. “With our help, Zohran Mamdani will be the Democratic nominee for mayor.”

Cuomo, 67, had sought a political comeback nearly four years after resigning as governor amid a sexual harassment scandal.

Mamdani, 33, was born in Uganda, moved to New York at age seven, and became a US citizen in 2018. He was elected to the State Assembly in 2020.
