KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 (Bernama) — Brazil’s Secretary-General of Foreign Affairs, Maria Laura da Rocha, will be in Malaysia next week to attend the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (58th AMM) and Related Meetings, according to an official from the Brazilian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
“She will head the Brazilian delegation in the second trilateral Brazil-ASEAN Chair-ASEAN Secretariat meeting on July 8,” the official told Bernama when contacted Friday.
Malaysia is hosting the 58th AMM from July 8 to 11 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
Malaysia took over the role of ASEAN Chair on January 1 this year from Laos. This is Malaysia’s fifth ASEAN Chairmanship after having assumed the role in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.
Brazil acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in 2012, in the process becoming the first Latin American country to do so.
In 2022, the 55th AMM conferred the status of Sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN to Brazil.
The 2nd ASEAN-Brazil Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee (AB-JSCC) held on December 14, 2023, adopted the ASEAN-Brazil Sectoral Dialogue Partnership: Practical Cooperation Areas (2024-2028) which would serve as a practical guide to substantiate cooperation between both sides.
Rocha is representing Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Viera, who has to be in Rio de Janeiro for the 17th BRICS Summit from July 6 to 7. Brazil is the president of BRICS this year.
