PETALING JAYA: Bersatu’s Negeri Sembilan chapter has declared its support for party president Muhyiddin Yassin amid a call for a leadership change from the party’s Port Dickson division.

Negeri Sembilan Bersatu chief Hanifah Abu Baker said the chapter stood firm behind Muhyiddin’s continued leadership of the party and Perikatan Nasional ahead of the 16th general election.

“We express our full commitment and unwavering support to Muhyiddin to continue leading the party as Bersatu’s founding president and to helm PN in facing GE16,” he said in a statement

Hanifah said this support was in line with the decision reached during Bersatu’s 2024 annual general assembly, which had recognised Muhyiddin’s important role as a credible, experienced and principled figure in strengthening the party’s direction and struggles.

He said the state chapter was focused on strengthening the party machinery at all levels, including through strategic reorganisation, grassroots mobilisation, and enhanced training and readiness, for GE16.

He also said unity, determination and loyalty to the leadership were key to facing future challenges and ensuring the party could effectively represent the people.

“Muhyiddin is not just a leader, he is a symbol of stability (and) decisiveness, and he has deep concern for the people’s welfare. It is, therefore, our collective responsibility to defend his leadership and further strengthen unity in Bersatu and PN,” he said.

Earlier today, Bersatu’s Port Dickson division in Negeri Sembilan passed a motion calling for deputy president Hamzah Zainudin to take over the party’s leadership, with Muhyiddin stepping back to serve as an adviser and mentor.

The motion also proposed that vice-president Radzi Jidin manage the party’s administration in place of secretary-general Azmin Ali.

However, Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz said Muhyiddin still has the support of the majority of the party’s grassroots to remain as party president, based on motions approved by its 202 divisions.

Bersatu Youth has also dismissed the motion as a “cheap publicity stunt” that does not reflect grassroots’ sentiment.
