SUBANG JAYA: Many Malaysians love Thai food. But are you bored of the usual menus? If you are, check out Nood’N in Subang Jaya – a spot that might just change what you thought you knew about Thai cuisine.

Follow the red stairs to the upper floor of a SS15 shoplot, and you’ll step into cosy interiors made for casual dining.

Open for about a year now, Nood’N was founded by Daniel Raj D’Nathan, 31, after he crossed paths with Thai restaurateur Shiva Pinrenu.

“I love Thailand, so I travel there frequently,” Daniel told FMT Lifestyle.

“Shiva was already running a place called Nood’N back in Bangkok, but it was a small restaurant for takeaway only. And they were selling just noodles,” he shared.

Daniel saw this as the perfect opportunity to bring an authentic Thai experience to his hometown, Subang Jaya – but this time branching beyond noodles.

So if this place isn’t about noodles, why the name?

“I asked Shiva, why Nood’N? He said, ‘Don’t you hear everyone around Thailand? They can’t roll their tongues, so they can’t say noodles. Instead, they will say ‘nooden’,” said Daniel.

Their menu focuses on authentic Thai cuisine, mainly from the southern region, highlighting many lesser-known dishes.

Not only are the ingredients all sourced from Thailand, but everything is cooked by chef Santi Paopa, who hails from the Nan district – about a nine-hour drive from Bangkok.

“I specifically told Shiva that if we were ever going to do this here in Malaysia, we definitely need a Thai chef. That’s going to make it more authentic and different,” Daniel said.

FMT Lifestyle tried some of their dishes, and it was a mouthwatering experience.

“We have what we call our traffic light fried rice. So, we have green curry fried rice, Southern yellow curry fried rice, and Panang red curry fried rice,” shared Daniel.

Their fragrant yellow curry paste with coconut milk is stir-fried with rice and chicken, bringing out that smoky wok hei, and finished off with a bubbly fried egg.

“You can’t really find this elsewhere because it’s slightly tedious to make, as you need to make each broth in advance,” he said.

If you’re expecting something similar to tom yam fried rice, you’ll be genuinely surprised by its unique flavours. It’s creamy, rich, and every grain is coated in a bomb of flavour.

If you prefer your fried rice on the dry side, this might not be for you. And fair warning – it packs quite a kick, so have some tissues ready!

Another top pick is their paku pakis. You’ve probably seen these wild ferns, in masak lemak or in soups. But at “Nood’N”, it’s mixed with morning glory (kangkung), coated in a light batter and deep-fried into crispy treats you just can’t stop eating. They’re perfect to snack on with a drink – and impressively, not oily at all.

Be sure to also try their shrimp cakes – densely packed, seasoned with oyster sauce, and coated in breadcrumbs before coming out golden brown. You can tell they’re made fresh: soft on the inside and generous with shrimp. They pair perfectly with the sweet dipping sauce.

And instead of the usual mango or papaya salad, go for their unique spicy squid salad, made with classic Thai ingredients like lemongrass, chillies, and fish sauce.

They also offer more unique regional dishes like Tom Zap – a spicy, sour chicken soup – or a slow-cooked southern beef soup that’s somewhat similar to Malaysia’s sup kambing.

Daniel’s favourite is the garlic fried chicken!

Of course, they have everything else you need to complete the perfect Thai meal – from tom yam to garlic chili lime steamed fish.

All in all, this place deserves way more hype. So next time you’re craving a real taste of Thailand without having to travel up north, drop by Nood’N for an authentic fix.
