PETALING JAYA: With outlets scattered throughout the Klang Valley and Penang, chances are you’ve heard of Yin’s Sourdough Bakery and Café – especially if you love sourdough bread.

Speaking with FMT Lifestyle recently, founder Chan Su Yin said the reason behind starting the business was “personal”. It was after her diabetic mother’s health improved once she switched to eating  sourdough bread.

“Before that, she was already watching her diet, avoiding sugar and practising tai chi daily. But her glucose levels kept rising,” she said.

Chan, 48, discovered sourdough bread while in the US. “I was amazed by the taste and texture. So I started baking sourdough bread, learning through online resources,” she said.

Having heard about its potential health benefits, she encouraged her mother, Poon Moy, to give it a try.

Poon did – and after about a year, her glucose levels stabilised. Poon told her doctor that the only change in her diet was sourdough bread.

After returning to Malaysia, Chan had to choose: return to her career in pharmaceutical sales or take a leap of faith by selling sourdough bread.

Having witnessed how it helped her mother, she chose the latter.

The rest is (delicious) history. In 2013, Chan opened her first outlet in Balik Pulau, Penang, where she baked sourdough bread and sold them to walk-in customers, online buyers and organic shops across the state.

“Our sourdough bread back then was a little tangier than it is now. Once, an elderly man who had purchased a loaf returned the next day and said, ‘Your bread has turned sour! It cannot be eaten – why are you still selling it?’”

So Chan began educating her customers about the bread. Today, she has eight cafés and two kiosks across the Klang Valley and Penang, with plans to open two additional outlets soon.

Chan said they still prepare everything in-house, from lasagna sheets to pizza bases, sausages, chicken luncheon meat, jams, kaya, cakes, pastries and more. This includes their own coffee roastery in Penang.

Their food, Chan shared, is preservatives- and additives-free and they only use unbleached flour. “I want to offer healthy, yet tasty food choices.”

But the business goes beyond wholesome food – it’s about compassion and community.

When she started her first outlet, Chan hired only two women – a single mother and a senior woman seeking employment.

Even as the business grew, Chan’s commitment to social impact remained. Today, Chan employs individuals from rural communities in Sabah, offering them training and accommodation.

They also provide internship opportunities to community college students in Penang, including those with special needs.

“It’s not just about running a business. You will find more joy when you work with different young people and provide them with opportunities.”

FMT Lifestyle visited the Damansara Utama outlet recently – and instantly felt at home.

If you love lasagna, don’t miss the sourdough chicken lasagna. It’s hearty without being too filling. And you’ll see that there is a difference between regular and sourdough lasagna sheets.

The mixed platter with chicken nuggets and sausages, both made in-house, come with crispy fries, fresh fruits and dipping sauces and is a real standout.

The Eggs Benedict is another tasty option: the salmon, cured in-house, tastes fresh, and is beautifully complemented by the sourdough croissant and creamy hollandaise sauce it is served with.

Other highlights include Yin’s Big Breakfast and Guacamole Luncheon Sourdough Sandwich, featuring chicken luncheon meat made in-house infused with fragrant Penang nutmeg.

Remarkably, they offer 20 varieties of sourdough bread, so don’t miss picking up a loaf or two on your way out.

Overall, whether you’re there for a wholesome meal, some sourdough bread or simply to support a business that gives back to the community, you’re bound to leave feeling nourished in more ways than one.
