Commonwealth Games Federation Rejects Malaysia’s Request to Host Badminton Events

A Medal Stronghold in Jeopardy

Malaysia has been a force to be reckoned with in the badminton world, winning two gold medals in the women’s doubles and mixed team events at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. However, the country’s request to host the badminton events at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has been rejected by the Commonwealth Games Federation.

The decision to reject Malaysia’s request was made to reduce the cost of hosting the tournament. Badminton, along with several other sports, has been dropped from the Glasgow games to achieve this goal.

Malaysia’s Proposal Rejected

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary-general, Nazifuddin Najib, revealed that Malaysia had proposed to host the badminton events concurrently with the other 10 sports held by the Glasgow organizers. However, the request was rejected, and the country is expected to accept the 10 sports determined by the host.

“We had proposed to host the badminton events along with the other 10 sports, but the request was rejected. We need to accept the 10 sports determined by the host,” Najib said during a press conference.

As a result, Malaysia is expected to field a smaller contingent to compete in Glasgow. The country’s badminton athletes will have to adjust to competing in a different environment and facing new challenges.

The 10 Sports to be Held in Glasgow

The Glasgow games will feature 10 sports, including athletics and para athletics, swimming and para swimming, artistic gymnastics, track cycling and para track cycling, netball, weightlifting and powerlifting, boxing, judo, bowling and para bowling, 3×3 basketball, and wheelchair 3×3 basketball.

The event is expected to attract around 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth countries and territories. The games will take place from July 23 to August 2.

Conclusion

Malaysia’s request to host the badminton events at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has been rejected, leaving the country’s badminton athletes to face new challenges. The decision to reduce the cost of hosting the tournament has led to the dropping of several sports, including badminton, from the Glasgow games.
