Malaysia’s Men’s Hockey Junior Asia Cup 2024 campaign got off to a flying start as they defeated China 5-2 in their opening match at the Oman Hockey Stadium in Muscat, Oman, today.

The Young Tigers, as they are known, were led by a quartet of goal scorers, including Che Nur Aqilrullah Che Mohd Khairulzi Anwar, Muhammad Addy Jazmi Jamlus, Muhammad Khairul Norizam, and Naaveennash Panicker. Muhammad Danish Danial Abdul Wahab added the fifth goal for Malaysia in the 59th minute.

China, on the other hand, managed to score through Wang Yubo in the 5th minute and Zhang Jialiang in the 46th minute.

Malaysia will continue their Group B campaign with matches against hosts Oman tomorrow, Bangladesh on Saturday (Nov 30) and Pakistan on Sunday (Dec 1). According to national team manager Ganesh Shanmugam, the team’s main target is to finish top two in the group and qualify for the semi-finals.

National team head coach I. Vikneswaran also emphasized the need for the team to reach the last four of the tournament, with the top six teams earning spots in the 2025 Junior World Cup.
