Internal Crisis in PN: Rising Tensions Among Component Parties

Must Read

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 December 2024 – The internal crisis engulfing Perikatan Nasional (PN) is increasingly revealing divisions among its component parties. Key issues sparking tensions between BERSATU and PAS have garnered significant public attention, particularly concerning disputes over leadership roles and political strategies ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16).

Dispute Over PN Chairman Role

The unilateral decision by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to appoint Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali as PN Secretary-General without prior consultation has caused dissatisfaction, especially from PAS. PAS is now proposing Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan to replace Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin in this position, as part of efforts to balance BERSATU’s perceived dominance.

Internal sources indicate that this tension may lead to a split if no compromise is reached between the two main parties in PN.

Debate Over Prime Minister Candidate

Additionally, the issue of PN’s Prime Minister candidate for GE16 has further heightened the pressure. Conflicting statements from leaders, including Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, reflect a lack of consensus on the coalition’s direction. This situation is feared to negatively impact PN’s unity as it prepares for the upcoming election.

Potential for a Split

Political analysts believe this crisis is a clear indication of power imbalances within PN. Failure to resolve these issues effectively could lead to a serious split among the component parties, ultimately weakening PN’s position as the main opposition coalition in Malaysia.

PN is now at a crossroads – whether it can defuse these tensions and strengthen its unity or risk losing public support ahead of GE16.
