Ananda Wants All Donations to Be Anonymous, Says Longtime Friend

PETALING JAYA: A longtime friend of the late billionaire Ananda Krishnan, who passed away at the age of 86 on Thursday, said the tycoon would only agree to donate if his name was not publicly disclosed.

A Vaithilingam, the former president of Malaysia Hindu Sangam, recalled how Ananda began supporting the Tamil Hindu Sangam during his presidency of the Hindu representative body in Malaysia. Vaithilingam shared that Ananda always requested that his name not be mentioned in connection with donations. “Please don’t mention my name for any donations. Mention that the donation is from MCEF (Malaysian Community Education Foundation), not from Ananda Krishnan,” he said in an interview with Bernama.

Vaithilingam explained that only after this condition was agreed upon did Ananda begin contributing to the Tamil Hindu Sangam and other foundations. Every year, from 2003 to 2009, the Tamil Hindu Sangam presented detailed reports and plans that were reviewed by certified accountants. “Every time, Ananda would praise their diligence, focusing on the impact of the work rather than seeking any personal credit,” said Vaithilingam.

Vaithilingam first met Ananda in 1946 in Brickfields, and their friendship grew stronger from childhood to adulthood. Ananda was very focused on education and economic growth in the country. “He was always willing to consider contributing when both were involved,” Vaithilingam said.

Ananda, who was born in Brickfields, became one of the most prominent business figures in Malaysia and was listed among the wealthiest individuals in the country. He founded Usaha Tegas, Maxis Communications, and Measat Broadcast Network Systems. According to the Forbes real-time billionaire list, Ananda’s net worth stood at USD 5.1 billion on 27 November 2024, placing him as the 667th wealthiest person in the world.

Ananda’s funeral will be held at his residence on Jalan Berhala, Brickfields, tomorrow. It will be open to the public from 5 PM to 9 PM.

Regarding his son’s decision to pursue a spiritual path despite the vast wealth he would inherit, Vaithilingam said Ananda supported his son’s journey with grace.
