Sungai Petani, December 9, 2024 – Residents of Indian Camp Village, Bedong, have once again lodged complaints about the persistent disturbances and pollution caused by the operations of a scrap metal shop known as Star Max. Complaints have been raised since 2018, yet no concrete action has been taken by the relevant authorities to date.

According to the complainant, Avallar A/L Renganathan, the shop is responsible for various issues, including air pollution, foul odors from burning waste materials, and the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes. Residents have also reported the presence of wild animals such as snakes, monitor lizards, and rats, posing a safety threat to the community.

In addition, the scrap metal shop reportedly operates without a valid license and is situated near schools and residential areas, creating discomfort for the neighborhood. “We are forced to live in an environment polluted with loud metal clanging and environmental contamination. Our requests to relocate the shop to a more suitable area have been ignored,” said Avallar.

The Kuala Muda District Health Office conducted an inspection on August 5, 2020, and verified the legitimacy of these complaints. Cleanup notices and fines were issued under the Destruction of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975. However, the situation remains unresolved.

What actions have been taken by the Kuala Muda IPD police? Residents of Indian Camp Village are questioning the effectiveness of police intervention in addressing this issue, as the pollution and safety concerns have persisted for so long without resolution.

Residents are urging the Sungai Petani Municipal Council (MPSPK), the Department of Environment, the Royal Malaysia Police, and other authorities to take firm action against the shop owner. Immediate measures are critical to safeguarding the health and safety of the village residents.
