Leading the Pack
LOS ANGELES: “Emilia Perez” – Jacques Audiard’s surreal, narco-thriller musical about a Mexican drug lord who transitions to life as a woman – led the Golden Globes nominations with 10 nods on Monday, as the race to the Oscars heats up.
“The Brutalist”, starring Oscar winner Adrien Brody as a Hungarian Jewish architect who survives the Holocaust, came in second with seven nominations, followed by papal drama “Conclave” with six nods for the gala in January.
Other Notable Nominations
Box office smash “Wicked”, adapted from a long-running Broadway play about the witches in “The Wizard of Oz”, landed four nominations, including for pop sensation Ariana Grande as the bubbly pink-clad Glinda and Tony winner Cynthia Erivo as the green-skinned Elphaba.
Netflix’s Emilia Perez
Netflix’s “Emilia Perez” – which is almost entirely in Spanish – started its march towards Hollywood awards glory in Cannes, where it won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
The genre-defying film stars transgender actress Karla Sofia Gascon as the title character, along with actress-singer Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana in supporting roles.
Other nods for “Emilia Perez” include two entries for best original song, best score, best non-English language film, best screenplay, and best comedy or musical film.
Television Front
On the television front, FX/Hulu’s “The Bear” led the pack with five nods, including for cast members Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Liza Colón-Zayas and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
It also received a nomination for best musical or comedy series – even if fans and critics alike have argued that it falls into neither category.
Other Notable Television Nominations
Following behind with four nods each were Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building”, and FX’s Japanese epic “Shogun”. “Only Murders” stars Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short as three residents of an apartment building who share a love of true crime – and get embroiled in a murder.
“Shogun”, a sweeping story about political machinations in 17th-century Japan, took home the Academy Award for best drama in September, while HBO Max’s “Hacks” – which received three Golden Globe nods, including for lead actress Jean Smart and supporting actress Hannah Einbinder – beat “The Bear” in the best comedy category during the Oscars.
New Shows Secure Nominations
Disney+’s “Agatha All Along”, Netflix’s “Nobody Wants This”, CBS’ “Matlock”, and HBO’s “The Penguin” were among new shows to secure nominations.
Conclusion
The Golden Globes, which are widely seen as a bellwether for the Academy Awards, will be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser on January 5.
