PETALING JAYA: The total cost of repairing roads damaged by the first wave of floods triggered by the northeast monsoon nationwide has been estimated at RM312.1 million as of yesterday.
Works minister Alexander Nanta Linggi said this included RM247 million for federal road maintenance, RM40.3 million for federal road slope repairs and RM24.8 million for state roads, Bernama reported.
“The final cost will be submitted soon. Meanwhile, my team and I have been on the ground assisting those affected by the first wave of floods,” Nanta said at a function in Butterworth today.
Separately, the Kelantan government has estimated losses due to the first wave of floods last month at RM30 million.
State education, higher education, green technology and innovation committee chairman Wan Roslan Wan Hamat said the amount is an initial estimate of the damage to property and infrastructure, including schools under the Kelantan Islamic Foundation (YIK).
At least seven schools under YIK were affected by the floods.
Meanwhile, meteorological department director-general Hisham Anip said continuous rainfall is expected to affect five states until tomorrow.
The affected areas include the entire state of Perlis, as well as parts of Kedah, including Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Pendang, Sik and Baling. The warning also covers Hulu Perak in Perak.
In addition, a continuous rain alert has been issued for several areas in Kelantan, including Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai.
