PETALING JAYA: Ace pairing Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik sent home fans into a frenzy by outplaying Danish pair Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard at the Malaysia Masters badminton championships today.

The world No 3 pair defeated their opponents 21-10, 21-19 at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

Aaron-Wooi Yik had to put up a fight in the second game after falling behind 12-16, but emerged victorious in the 35-minute match.

They will meet another Danish pair, world No 1 Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, in the semi-finals tomorrow.

At their last encounter in the opening round of the All England Open championship in March, the Danish pair defeated Aaron-Wooi Yik in a three-game thriller.

The Malaysians’ fiery form today was buoyed by the deafening roar of a capacity crowd which appeared to be calling for revenge against Rasmus-Frederik, who defeated Kang Khai Xing-Aaron Tai yesterday in a tense match marred by four controversial line calls in the rubber game.

The umpire’s calls all went against the Malaysian duo in the quarter-finals yesterday, sparking protest from the fans who waved the torchlights on their handphones and booed at him as he left the stadium.

According to Malaysian doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi, the calls could not be challenged as the duo were playing on Court 2, which did not have the video-assisted checking system.

The Malaysia Masters is a World Tour Super 500 series. The doubles champions will earn US$37,525 (RM159,000) and the runners-up, US$18,050 (RM76,542). The semi-finalists will each get US$6,650 (RM28,200).
