LUMUT, July 6 (Bernama) — UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi outlined four preprequisites to enable the party to retake the Lumut parliamentary seat, along with the Pangkor and Pasir Panjang state seats in the upcoming 16th general election (GE16).
The prerequisites include unity and uniting the Lumut UMNO Division members and fostering ties with Barisan Nasional (BN) component members.
“Lumut UMNO and BN must be united, there’s no room for discord. Our political enemy isn’t strong, but internal weakness resulted in a lack of confidence in our own party that weakens our fight.
“The old culture of backstabbing, blaming leaders should stop immedately. The main prerequisite to winning is uniting Lumut UMNO Division,” he said during the officiation of the 2025 Lumut UMNO Division Delegates’ meeting here today, in the presence of Perak UMNO liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Lumut UMNO Division chief Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Ahmad Zahid said that UMNO cannot retake the seats on their own but required help from compoment partners like MIC and MCA, and stressed that UMNO members have to abandon the old culture and prove to partners that the party has changed.
Ahmad Zahid also said that winning the social media battleground and approaching voters in more strategic ways were also prerequisites.
“Social media is the new battlefield. UMNO Youth and UMNO Puteri need to be champions in the digital narrative. Reach voters through relevant and convincing social media content is very important to rebuild public trust.
“This (GE16) is the last chance to retake all three seats in Lumut, don’t waste it,” he added.
