Malaysian National Cycling Federation Eyes Medal Haul at 2024 UCI Track Cycling World Championships

The Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) is optimistic that the national team will return home with a medal haul from the 2024 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Denmark, despite the absence of Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang.

MNCF president Datuk Amarjit Singh believes that Mohd Azizulhasni’s replacement, Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, will do Malaysia proud in the keirin and sprint events at the championships.

A Strong Replacement

"During the Paris Olympics, we saw how Shah Firdaus nearly produced a shock before his unfortunate accident some 50 metres before the finish line," Amarjit said. "He is in good form and ready for the championships. I believe that if he can reproduce that form, he can produce another stunning result."

Mohd Azizulhasni had earlier withdrawn from the championships to focus on completing his studies at Victoria University in Melbourne.

Other Riders to Watch

Apart from Shah Firdaus, his brother Muhammad Ridwan Sahrom and women riders Izzah Izzati Asri and Anis Amira Rosidi will also be competing in the championships.

Amarjit hopes that Izzah Izzati, the holder of the national women’s sprint record, can improve on her mark at the world meet. She set a new national record of 10.709 seconds in the qualifying rounds of the Paris Olympics in Saint Quentin en Yvelines, Paris.

Technical Director’s Assessment

National track cycling team technical director John Beasley believes that Shah Firdaus is Malaysia’s best bet for a medal when he competes in the keirin event tomorrow.

"The riders are all healthy and ready to start the competition," he said.

Conclusion

The Malaysian national cycling team is determined to make a mark at the 2024 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Denmark. With a strong lineup of riders, including Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, Muhammad Ridwan Sahrom, Izzah Izzati Asri, and Anis Amira Rosidi, the team is confident of returning home with a medal haul.
