PETALING JAYA: Pakistan’s investments in Malaysia have surged to US$397 million (approximately RM1.76 billion), reinforcing strong economic ties between the two nations, according to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
During a phone conversation with his Pakistani counterpart, Shehbaz Sharif, Anwar welcomed further investments from Pakistan, particularly in key sectors such as agriculture, petrochemicals, and biomass. He also confirmed that Shehbaz will be making his first visit to Malaysia on May 9.
“We reviewed key areas of collaboration, including trade, education, and research, and agreed to expedite pending matters to advance our shared goals. Our discussion also touched on the ongoing crisis in Gaza, as Israel’s violations of the ceasefire continue to undermine peace efforts. We exchanged views and coordinated efforts to support Gaza’s reconstruction and end the violence against Palestinians,” Anwar stated in a Facebook post.
Anwar previously made a three-day visit to Pakistan last October, during which he successfully secured RM2.65 billion in potential trade deals for Malaysia. This visit strengthened bilateral ties and opened new avenues for trade cooperation.
In November, Malaysia’s high commissioner to Pakistan, Azhar Mazlan, highlighted that Malaysia’s semiconductor sector has attracted interest from Pakistani investors. This industry is seen as a new area of collaboration that both countries are keen to explore further.
Additionally, Anwar shared that he also received a call from Iran’s president, Dr Masoud Pezeshkian, affirming Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening its diplomatic and economic relations with Iran. He noted that Malaysia’s foreign minister’s visit to Tehran last month marked a positive step in advancing bilateral ties.
“To build on this momentum, I will ensure the swift and seamless implementation of initiatives to enhance partnerships in investment, trade, education, research, and beyond,” he said.
