Awtar Singh Slams Mitra Scholarship Announcement: “Shameful” and “Inadequate” for Indian Community Needs

Must Read

KUALA LUMPUR, 12 December 2024 – Renowned community activist Awtar Singh has expressed deep disappointment over the recent scholarship announcement by Mitra (Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit). In a passionate statement, Awtar labeled the move as “shameful” and “inadequate” in addressing the needs of the Indian community in Malaysia.

Mitra’s announcement, which offers only 10 full scholarships and 40 partial scholarships, was criticized for being insufficient to make a meaningful impact. Awtar questioned the transparency of the selection process and urged Mitra to clarify the criteria used in awarding the scholarships.

“Ten full scholarships? This is not aid; this is an insult. How many Indian students excel in STPM and genuinely need help? If you cannot help more, it’s better not to make an announcement at all,” he asserted.

Awtar also criticized the promise to “uplift the Indian community’s economy,” stating it cannot be achieved with such minimal support. He called for an increase in the number of scholarships, improved transparency, and broader participation in the allocation process to ensure fairness.

“We don’t need empty promises. We need real action. If you’re serious about helping the Indian community, you must do better than this,” he added.

The announcement has sparked heated debates on social media, with many netizens echoing Awtar’s sentiments and voicing dissatisfaction with Mitra’s seemingly inadequate efforts.

As of now, Mitra has yet to respond to the criticisms. However, mounting pressure from the community may compel them to address these concerns and reconsider their aid policies for the Indian community.
