Denial of Azmin’s Confirmation as PN Secretary-General
Bersatu Leader Clarifies Recent Statement by Muhyiddin Yassin
KUALA LUMPUR: A Bersatu leader has denied that Azmin Ali is confirmed as the next Perikatan Nasional (PN) secretary-general, saying a recent statement by coalition chairman Muhyiddin Yassin to that effect was only a suggestion.
According to Bersatu Supreme Council member Rosol Wahid, what Muhyiddin had said was still at “the proposal level” and had yet to be brought to the Bersatu and PN Supreme Councils.
“(Muhyiddin) might have been misquoted, so let’s just wait for the meeting (of the Bersatu and PN Supreme Councils),” he said at a press conference at the Parliament building.
PAS Weighs in with Alternative Candidate
PAS and PN Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, however, appealed for PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan to take over the post, citing his experience and seniority within PN.
Denial of PAS Unhappiness with Azmin’s Appointment
PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad meanwhile rubbished claims that the Islamic party was unhappy about Azmin being the incoming PN secretary-general, denying an FMT report earlier today quoting a Bersatu source.
He said there were no issues in PAS with Azmin becoming the new PN secretary-general, and that the coalition’s focus was on ensuring unity among components.
Concerns Over Azmin’s Appointment
A source within Bersatu, however, expressed concerns that Azmin’s appointment might widen a rift between PAS and Bersatu, as it seemed to have been done in a hurry and was not discussed among PN component parties.
Conclusion
The confirmation of Azmin Ali as the next Perikatan Nasional (PN) secretary-general remains unclear, with a Bersatu leader denying that a recent statement by coalition chairman Muhyiddin Yassin was more than a proposal. The appointment has sparked concerns and alternative suggestions, including from PAS, with the coalition’s focus on ensuring unity among its components.
