KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 (Bernama) — The High Commission of Bangladesh in Malaysia celebrated the country’s 54th Independence and National Day on Wednesday, highlighting the enduring friendship and growing cooperation between the two nations.

Its High Commissioner, Md Shameem Ahsan said political ties between Bangladesh and Malaysia have been strengthened by the long-standing friendship between their leaders.

“The Honourable Chief Advisor of the Bangladesh Government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, and the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, are trusted friends with deep mutual respect for each other,” he said at the celebration.

He said Anwar’s visit to Bangladesh last year, the first head of government to do so following the July-August Revolution, demonstrates his unwavering support for Professor Yunus’s leadership and vision for a new Bangladesh.

Md Shameem also highlighted Bangladesh’s rapid socio-economic development, which has positioned the country as an increasingly valuable partner for Malaysia.

“Bangladesh is now Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner in South Asia, with bilateral trade volume reaching nearly US$4 billion in the last fiscal year.

“Malaysia also remains a key investor in Bangladesh, with over 380 Malaysian companies currently operating within our borders. We invite Malaysian businesses to further explore the vast opportunities Bangladesh has to offer,” he said.

The High Commissioner said Bangladesh has earned international recognition for its achievements in poverty alleviation, food security, women’s empowerment, gender parity, disaster management, and climate change resilience.

Meanwhile, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri who was guest of honour at the event said Malaysia hopes to strengthen cooperation with Bangladesh in the area of women’s economic empowerment.
