Minister of Youth and Sports: 50% of Athlete Safety Cases Settled Under Safe Sport Code

Subang Jaya, October 22 – Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, announced that 50% of the 38 cases related to athlete safety received since 2021 through the Safe Sport Code under the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) have been settled.

Athlete Safety Cases on the Rise

The Minister attributed the increase in cases to the awareness programme carried out by the ministry, stating that awareness is key in reducing the number of reported cases. "Usually, after we enhance awareness, such cases will increase… not because there are more cases but because they (the athletes) are aware that such matters are wrong and can be reported," she said.

No Plans to Replace Sabah as Co-Organiser of 2027 SEA Games

When asked about the withdrawal of Sabah as a co-organiser of the 2027 SEA Games, Minister Hannah Yeoh reassured that the plan to hold the biennial Games will go on as scheduled, with Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and Sarawak remaining as co-organisers. "There are no other states (involved) as we had sent out notices before this happened. We have three (states) and that’s enough… don’t worry, it will not be derailed even without Sabah. Further meetings on the hosting of the SEA Games will be held as soon as possible," she said.

Assistance for National Women’s doubles Badminton Player

In a related development, Minister Hannah Yeoh revealed that the ministry is willing to provide assistance to national women’s doubles professional shuttler Ng Qi Xuan, who is seeking financial aid to undergo surgery after dislocating her knee during the Malaysia Super 100 badminton tournament last week. "The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will provide rehabilitation assistance and I have contacted National Sports Institute (NSI) chief executive officer Faedzal (Ahmad Faedzal Md Ramli) to see what else we can help her with," she said.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Ministry of Youth and Sports is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of athletes, and is working towards settling cases related to athlete safety. With the awareness programme in place, the minister is confident that the number of reported cases will decline.
