The search for the missing boat pilgrim who went missing after his fibreglass boat hit a rock downstream of Jeram Pelagus has ended in tragedy. The body of the victim was found drowned in Nanga Makoh by the search and rescue team (SAR) at 3:30 pm today.
Kapit Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief, Timothy Barat, who is also the commander of the SAR operation, confirmed that the body was taken to the Kapit jetty and handed over to the police for further action. With the discovery of the victim’s body, the SAR operation, which entered its second day, was terminated at 4:50 pm.
Yesterday’s Incident
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when the victim, who was piloting the boat, went missing while his wife and employees were safe. The boat was heading from Rumah Belaja in Nanga Benin to Kapit town when it hit a rock downstream of Jeram Pelagus. The victim’s wife and employees immediately began searching for him, but he was not found.
SAR Operation
The Kapit Fire and Rescue Station was notified of the incident at 9:17 pm, and a search and rescue operation was launched immediately. Today’s operation, which began at 8 am, focused on a 30km area from the incident site to the downstream of Batang Rajang, using a search method on the river surface.
