BANGKOK, July 29 (Bernama) — United States (US) President Donald Trump has instructed his trade team to restart negotiations on trade with Thailand and Cambodia, following an agreement by both countries to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire along their contested shared border.

Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform on Monday, stating that he had spoken to both Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who had agreed to a ceasefire and peace efforts.

“Congratulations to all! By ending this war, we have saved thousands of lives. I have instructed my trade team to restart negotiations on trade. I have now ended many wars in just six months – I am proud to be the President of Peace!” Trump wrote.

Meanwhile, Phumtham, in a statement, confirmed the phone conversation and said that Trump had expressed admiration for Thailand’s courage and leadership in promoting peace within ASEAN.

He said Trump commended Thailand’s bravery and openness, noting that the country had set an example in fostering peace in the region.

“President Trump said this would earn Thailand praise from the international community for halting violence and preventing further loss of life. He believes our approach will also be beneficial for economic activities.

“He added that tariff negotiations would soon begin, which would bring tangible benefits to Thailand, and promised that the United States would do its utmost to support this process,” Phumtham said.

Phumtham, who is also Minister of Interior, added that Trump had expressed interest in visiting Thailand, describing it as a country rich in cultural values and worthy of admiration.

Phumtham extended an official invitation, noting Trump’s strong interest in making the visit.

“Based on our conversation, I believe the tariff negotiations are likely to progress positively, especially as the United States views Thailand as a constructive partner in promoting peace across ASEAN,” he said.

He further noted that French President Emmanuel Macron had also praised Thailand’s handling of the situation.

Thailand and Cambodia agreed to the ceasefire following a special meeting on Monday hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the current ASEAN Chair.

During the meeting, Phumtham and Manet reaffirmed their commitment to de-escalation and agreed to a ceasefire and a return to normalcy beginning 2400 hours (local time) on July 28, 2025.

The two Southeast Asian neighbours share a long-standing dispute over an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch of their border.

Tensions have been mounting since May 28 following a skirmish between troops of the two countries near the disputed Preah Vihear area that resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.

The most recent round of hostilities began on July 24, with armed clashes reported along Cambodia’s northern border region, resulting in casualties on both sides.
