Badminton Legend Urges Athletes to Accept RTG Programme Offer

Call to Accept RTG Programme Offer

Datuk Lee Chong Wei, the country’s badminton legend, has suggested that athletes listed in the Road To Gold (RTG) programme in preparation for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA 28) accept the offer.

Benefits of RTG Programme

Chong Wei, who is a member of the RTG committee, emphasized that the offer should not be rejected as it would greatly benefit the athletes involved, especially those who move professionally. "For me as an ex-athlete, of course I am happy if I get this opportunity from the National Sports Council and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS). Because it does not only help financially but also provides support services," he said.

Encouragement to Sign Up

Chong Wei expressed hope that all athletes would sign up for the RTG programme this time around, as there was one athlete who did not sign up for the programme previously. "So I hope that this time all athletes will sign for the RTG because previously there was one athlete who did not sign to enter the RTG program," he said when met by reporters after the Road to Gold (RTG) Committee meeting, which took place at Menara KBS today.

Denying Allegations

In response to allegations that athletes’ participation in the programme was used as promotional material, Chong Wei clarified that the purpose of the RTG was to help further improve the performance of athletes in preparation for LA 2028. "For me, if athletes sign up to enter this program, they will not lose," he said.

Athletes Selected for RTG Programme

Earlier, the RTG Committee named professional men’s singles player Lee Zii Jia, Asian Badminton Championships men’s doubles winners Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, along with 10 other badminton players for the RTG programme 2025.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the RTG programme offers a valuable opportunity for athletes to improve their performance and receive financial and support services. As Chong Wei emphasized, the programme is not just about promoting athletes, but about helping them achieve their goals.
