Counterfeit bags, shoes worth over RM250,000 seized near border

ALOR SETAR: The domestic trade and cost of living ministry’s office in Kedah has seized over RM250,000 worth of shoes and bags, suspected to be counterfeit items, near the Bukit Kayu Hitam border checkpoint.

Its Kedah office director Nizam Jamaludin said the seizure was made during a joint operation with a team from the General Operations Force (PGA) at around 8pm, during which two suspicious lorries were inspected.

“Our inspection revealed a number of items wrapped in gunny sacks, suspiciously placed at the back of the lorries.

“Further checks uncovered bags and shoes of various brands believed to be bearing registered trademarks that were misused,” he said in a statement tonight.

He said a total of 387 bags, 1,528 pairs of shoes of various brands, and two lorries were confiscated for further investigation under the Trademarks Act 2019.

Nizam reminded the public not to sell counterfeit goods as stern action would be taken, adding that the ministry would continue intensifying inspections and enforcement operations under the “Kita Gempur” initiative.
