Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan Calls for Serious Attention on RM9/Hour Allowance, Which is Unbalanced with the Intensity and Risk of Doctors’ Work

PETALING JAYA: Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan, an activist and the chief editor of Ottrangknews, today urged the government to pay serious attention to the RM9/hour on-call allowance, which he described as unbalanced with the intensity and risk faced by doctors. He emphasized that this rate almost insults the sacrifices made by doctors who serve as frontline workers tirelessly.

“I fully support the proposal by Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, the Chief of PAS Youth, to establish an independent Health Service Commission to ensure that the policies and framework of the health sector align better with the realities of doctors’ work. This RM9/hour rate is unjust and hardly acknowledges the efforts and sacrifices of doctors,” said Dato’ G Kumaar.

He also suggested that the government immediately raise the on-call allowance without waiting for changes in the work model or the implementation of the Differentiated Working Hours (WBB) system. “The government cannot just rely on the guidelines set by JPA without understanding the reality of doctors’ work, which is different from other public sectors,” Dato’ G Kumaar added.

Commenting on the issue of WBB, introduced to reduce doctors’ workload, Dato’ G Kumaar said, “While the original objective of WBB is good, the various issues arising indicate that this policy requires a thorough review. Immediate action is needed to increase the workforce in the health sector.”

Dato’ G Kumaar also supported Afnan’s suggestion that the government adopt a more inclusive approach by involving junior doctors and specialists in discussions on critical issues, and providing a more open platform to hear their grievances.

“The health service system cannot be compared with other sectors. Therefore, PAS Youth supports the proposal to establish an independent Health Service Commission to ensure that the policies and framework of the health sector align better with the realities of doctors’ work,” said Dato’ G Kumaar.

He further emphasized that the welfare of doctors is not just a technical issue but also involves moral and ethical aspects that the government must consider. “Doctors have faced extraordinary challenges, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. They deserve the proper attention without compromise,” he added.
