PUTRAJAYA – Malaysia and Thailand are strengthening cooperation to address the issue of individuals suspected of holding dual identification cards and dual citizenship. The Malaysian Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, confirmed that a list of names provided by the Thai authorities has been shared for verification through the National Registration Department (NRD) database.
He further clarified that such incidents are not new and that cases of individuals possessing identities from both countries do exist. However, the exact number of individuals involved is still under verification.
“We have a good relationship with the Thai authorities, and this collaboration enables us to identify cases of dual citizenship. We need to establish the exact figures before taking further action,” he stated.
This issue has raised concerns about the risks of identity fraud, misuse of citizenship rights, and threats to national security. As a result, Malaysian authorities will tighten identity verification procedures and take stern action against those found guilty.
The government also reminded the public that holding dual citizenship is illegal in Malaysia, and offenders could face penalties, including the revocation of their citizenship.
